Sadness to Joy

October 16, 2019

I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. O Lord, my God, I cried to you for help, and you healed me. O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30: 1-5 (NRSV)

One day at church, Shirley Prince, from Alabama, was very sad over the death of someone in her family. When worship was over, she stepped outside to the church play-ground. One of the two swings was broken, and the girl who was swinging told her friend that she could have her turn next. even so, the second little girl went away crying. Shirley went over to her and asked her if she would like to play a game with her that she had played when  she was a little girl. They introduced themselves and began to play, Soon the little girl was laughing. She took Shirley's hand and held it until her mom came to take her home.

At that moment, Shirley's sadness turned to joy.  She felt that the Lord showed love to her through this little girl. They helped each other move from sadness to joy. Now her friend and Shirley share a big hug when they see each other at church on Sundays.

God wants every one of us to feel loved. God sent Jesus to show us God's love - a love that not only dries our tears but lets us know that our Father is always with us. So, if you are feeling sad, try to find someone else who is sad and cheer them up. In the process, you will find yourself feeling better also.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for comforting us in times of sadness. Help us bring joy to those around us, in Jesus' name, amen.
