Children Know Better

September 17, 2019

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." Matthew 18: 1-5 (NRSV)

The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the little children in the Temple shouting, :Praise God for the Son of David." But they were indignant and asked Jesus, "Do you hear what these children are saying?" "Yes," Jesus replied, "Haven't you ever read the Scriptures? For they say,'You have taught children and infants to give you praise.' " Matthew 21:15-16 (NLT)

One day while Deepika Emmanuel Sagar, from Rajasthan, India, and his family were preparing for an outing, his four-year-old son said that they should pray before they left. When ashed what he would like to pray for, he said, "Let's thank God for Jesus."

When we help our children to grow in their faith, they in turn can give us an entirely different perspective. Deepika has prayed throughout her life, giving thanks for all the blessings that she received on a daily basis. Sometimes too many of her blessings went unnoticed. But her son reminded her that we are surrounded by blessings every day. One of the greatest blessings we have received is Jesus, God's son, through whom grace is made available to each of us. Her four-year-old son reminded her of that fact that day.

No one knows the kingdom of God better than children. And that is why Jesus tells us to be like them in our faith.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we thank you for Jesus and for the abundant grace that you have made available through him. Amen.
