A Simple Ministry

September 16, 2019

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand,'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him,'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer them,'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."  Matthew 25: 31-40 (NRSV)

One day while Thad H. Carter and his mom were waiting for the bus, his mother talked to the attendant about his need for Christ. Thad noticed that he listened carefully and that his mom's witness made an impression on him. Thad's mother loved people and was always eager to share her faith.

When Thad was preparing for ministry, he listened to lectures like, "How to Be a Witness." But when he shares his faith today, he remembered his Mom's witness for Jesus. Her desire to share Christ  was based on a real concern for others, not an exercise based on a step-by-step method taught in a classroom.

His Mom's actions impressed upon Thad that her faith was real and that she wanted everyone she met to Know about Christ's saving power. His mother did not consider herself a minister. Yet she fed people, prayed with those who needed prayer, and encouraged those who were discouraged. She simply did what needed to be done to help others and to share her faith.

Thad learned from his mother's example that sharing our faith doesn't have to be complicated or follow a particular method. It's something any of us can do every day - wherever we are.

Prayer: dear God, help us as we share your love and the staory of salvation with others, in Jesus' name, amen.
