As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. and whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:12-17 (NRSV)
As Lin Daniels, from Massachusetts, was sitting in the waiting area on the emergency room, his thoughts were fixed on his asthma-related breathing issues. He had not planned to spend time at the hospital that day. Sitting nearby was a five-year old boy named Dominic, sporting a small bandage on his head. The nurse confided that Dominic was quite frightened. Lin edged over to the open seat adjourning the boy and his mother and asked him if he would like to see some animal photos on his cell phone. Soon Lin's attention shifted from himself to the boy. and he quickly found he had a new friend.
Soon Dominic noticed an elderly woman quietly crying on the opposite side of the waiting room. "Would you like to come with me to check on her?" Lin asked. As he expressed Dominic's concern to her, she introduced herself and shook his hand. Before long, she and Dominic were looking at pictures of her pet dogs and grandchildren. Lin smiled as the kindness in both their hearts overtook their immediate worries.
Lin's interaction with Dominic helped him to realize that we can allow God's kindness to travel with us wherever we go. As we plant seeds of compassion, they are multiplied exponentially. And in each action and word - to God be the glory!
Prayer: God of all, thank you for your daily compassion. May we seek opportunities to extend your love and grace to those around us. May whatever we do in word or deed be done for the glory of God, in Jesus' name, amen
