Be Still

August 15, 2019

Read Exodus 14:10-18

But Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you , and you have only to keep still." Exodus 14: 13-14 (NRSV)

Adam Benson, from North Carolina, tells the story of a friend who went white-water rafting with a small group, and after going over a class IV rapid, she was tossed out of the raft and into a turbulent part of the river called a weir. Her natural instinct was to fight against the current and try to swim to the top, but she had been coached by her rafting instructor before-hand that the way to survive a fall into a weir is to be still. In this very tense moment, she remembered her instructor's words; she remained still, and the current spit her out.

What a reminder o Moses' words to the Israelites after God had led them safely to the other side of the Red Sea: "The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still." Sometimes when we are experiencing turbulent waters in our own lives, being still is one of the most difficult things to do in the world. When Pharaoh's army was within sight and the Israelites felt that their lives were about to end, Moses' words to them was , "Be still." When we're confronted with life's challenges, our impulse is often to fight back or maybe to give up. But being still shows our trust that God is bigger than our challenges and that even when we are uncertain, God is faithful to us.

Prayer: Dear God, in times of trial and doubt when we feel helpless, teach us to trust you, in Jeuss' name, amen.
