Read Luke 12: 22-34 He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens; they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you - you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for the kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
"Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (NSRV)
Hassan A. Bello, from Kaduna, Nigeris, is a banker and a pastor. Recently, he was faced with the possibility of dismissal from his job. His first reaction was fear and concern for his wife and their young son. He was also upset because he felt like his possible dismissal meant that his work for the past four years at the organization had not been sufficient. He tried to act as if all were well when He was at work, but he was deeply troubled by his situation.
Before he went to sleep one night, Hassan took his concerns to the Lord in prayer. When he woke up the following morning, a word from the Lord came to remind him of God's ability to feed the birds of the air and to clothe the lilies of the fields so they never have to worry (luke 12:22-34). This reminder of God's blessings relieved the heaviness in his heart and reminded Hassan of the possibilities and provisions that God will provide for his needs even if he lost his job.
When we are faced with scary possibilities, it can be easy to worry and feel as if we are alone. During times of worry and uncertainty, we can cast our cares of God. The Lord opens pathways for us when we don't see a way on our own.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for making a way for us. Help us remeber to trust you when we begin to worry or fear for our future, in Jesus' name, amen.
