To See God More Clearly

February 26, 2019

2 Corinthians 4: 16-18 "So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal." (NRSV)

2 Corinthians 5:7 "for we walk by faith, nit by sight." (NRSV)

For years I have been treated for glaucoma, but I also have cataracts.  My vision has been fairly stable, but I do have some issues with blurring at times. After 10 years, I thought it time to get some new glasses. During my exam, the optometrist told me, "your current prescription hasn't changed much, but your cataracts are ready for extraction." That means cataract surgery, which could improve my vision, and is very common these days, but it is still surgery.

I talked about this with family and friends, who shared scripture and prayers. One of the most meaningful was a line from the musical Godspell: Day by day, oh dear Lord, three things I pray: To see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day." Yes! I need to fix my eyes on God - to see God more clearly. These words have become very meaningful to me.

Of course we don't see God with our physical eyes, but we "see" God when we pray, read the Bible, and share in fellowship with other Christians. Through these faith practices we can draw closer to God, who is always close to us.

Prayer: Dear God, teach us to focus on you and draw closer to you each day, in Jesus' name, amen.
