Colossians 3: 23-24  Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord........since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ. (NSRV)

Heather Artushin, from Michigan, writes for The Upper Room. She relates that as a new social worker, she quickly realized that counseling teens through trauma, anxiety, depression, and conflict was draining and overwhelming. She began to feel discontent with the job she had dedicated years of education to and was discouraged by the problems that never seemed to be solved in the lives of her clients.

When she started attending a new church, she wondered about their logo - a series of arrows pointing upward. The pastor talked about the idea of "vertical living"; doing everything for the glory of God. It took time for this radical idea to sink in. Going to church, reading the Bible, praying, donating to those in need - these aren't the only ways to bring glory to God. When her view of doing everything for the glory of God expanded to include the mundane details of her life - cleaning the house, taking care of her family, showing love to her friends, and even going to work every day - the burden of being unable to solve all of her clients' problems lifted. She realized that her role was not to solve every problem but to be the light of Christ in their lives, to bring God the glory through her faithful service. That has brought new meaning to her life's work, no matter how mundane at times - eternal meaning that surpasses any earthly satisfaction. To God be the glory!

This is a message most of us can relate to. I realized a long time ago that, as a nurse, and at times, I had difficult people to work for; that what kept me going was realizing I was working for God more than for my superiors. This helped me thru some difficult times. It is important to know who is "The Boss" and to whom we will answer in the long run.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to commit every moment of each day to You. Walk with us, and guide our words and actions so that we show Your love to all, in Jesus' name. Amen.
