Why Pray?

1. We are commanded to pray. For example, Jesus said we are to pray at all times and "not to lose heart" (Luke 18:1), and we are told to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer should define our lives.

2. Through prayer we meet with God and experience a relationship with Him. What an unspeakable honor to come boldly into the presence of the Creator of the universe! One vehicle for this is praise. The Scriptures tell us that God inhabits the praises of His people (see Psalm 22:3).

3. In prayer we have the opportunity to confess and repent of our sins to God and have a clean conscience. In John 1:9 we are told, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

4. Prayer is the way we receive answers and wisdom from the Lord. "You do not have because you do not ask" (James 4:2). In James 1:5 we also discover that prayer reveals God's wisdom to us. God delights in giving us the insights we need to handle the problems we face in life.

5. Prayer will lighten our load. in Matthew 11:28, Jesus said, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Prayer is a practical way to exchange our worries for His peace. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7).
